Summary: OpenAI just held a livestream where it introduced GPT-4.1. With this news, the company also announced that it’s going to get rid of a few of its previous models, including GPT-4.
OpenAI has been on a roll lately with its releases. The company granted ChatGPT image generation capabilities, which basically broke the internet. Also, it improved ChatGPT’s memory capability. So, you can say that OpenAI is experiencing some time in the spotlight. We’re sure that it’s getting as much in before Google I/O next month.
Among the announcements, OpenAI has some exciting news for its fans. The company just had a livestream where it announced a new model. Along with that, it announced that it’s getting rid of some older models. These models fix one thing that has been holding ChatGPT back.
OpenAI launched GPT-4.1
While it’s not GPT-5, it’s still something to get excited about. The company held a livestream on Monday detailing its latest big release. GPT-4.1 is the latest flagship model from the company. Apparently, the best things come in 3’s, as OpenAI released three versions of GPT-4.1. This is similar to how Google had three versions of Gemini with differing sizes.
The most advanced model is GPT-4.1, while the next step down is GPT-4.1 Mini. This version is much smaller and lighter. Also, it’s much cheaper to use, so developers will be able to experiment with it. Lastly, the smallest, fastest, and most lightweight model is called GPT-4.1 Nano.
This new family of models solves one of the issues holding ChatGPT back, and that’s the context window. Previous models from the company were outmatched by offerings from Google, with GPT-4o only offering 128,000 tokens. Well, all three of these models have a context window of a million tokens. This is a massive improvement, and it puts OpenAI’s models up there with the competition.
Looking at the results of SWE-bench, GPT-4.1 scored a 55%, which is higher than GPT-4o (33%), o1 (41%), o3 (49%), and GPT-4.5 Preview (38%). So, that’s a pretty big improvement in AI smarts. GPT-4.1 mini (24%) also scored higher than GPT-4o mini (9%).
Some models are going away
OpenAI is getting rid of a few older models while it brings in its new children. What was once the pinnacle of OpenAI’s achievement, GPT-4, will be going away on April 30th. Along with that, OpenAI will also be getting rid of GPT-4.5 Preview. You will no longer be able to access it using the API, however, this won’t happen until July 14th.
