As many as 17 companies of central forces have been deployed in trouble-torn Murshidabad district in West Bengal and around 150 people have been held so far in connection with the violent protests over the Waqf (Amendment) Act.
The widespread violence, in which three people were killed and several others injured, has ignited a political firestorm in Bengal. The opposition BJP alleged that over 400 people have fled the violence-hit district for safety, while ruling Trinamool Congress accused the saffron party of politicising the issue to its benefit.
In an urgent hearing on Saturday, the Calcutta High Court ordered the deployment of central forces in Murshidabad district, where protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act spiralled into major violence.
Appealing for peace in the violence-hit areas, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced that the Act would not be implemented in the State.
Remained tense
As many as 17 companies of central forces have been deployed so far. More central armed forces are likely to be deployed as minority dominated-Murshidabad remained tense on Sunday as well.
As central armed forces and police patrolled sensitive areas in Dhulian, Shamsherganj and Suti, which witnessed widespread violence in the district in the last two days, people remained indoors, shops were closed and roads were deserted.
Prohibitory orders under section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) have been imposed in the violence-hit areas, and the internet has been suspended.
“More than 400 Hindus from Dhulian, Murshidabad driven by fear of religiously driven bigots were forced to flee across the river and take shelter at Par Lalpur High School, Deonapur-Sovapur GP, Baisnabnagar, Malda. Religious persecution in Bengal is real,” Leader of the Opposition in State Assembly Suvendu Adhikari wrote on social media platform X.
“Appeasement politics of TMC has emboldened radical elements. Hindus are being hunted, our people are running for their lives in their own land! Shame on the State Govt for allowing this breakdown of law & order,” Adhikari added.
BJP’s Purulia MP Jyotirmay Singh Mahato on Sunday wrote to Union Home Minister Amit Shah urging the Centre to declare select bordering districts of West Bengal as “disturbed areas” under the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA), alleging repeated attacks on the Hindu community.
Mahato, in his letter, alleged that districts such as Murshidabad, Malda, Nadia and South 24 Parganas witnessed violence against Hindus. But, the State administration turned a “blind eye” due to the ruling Trinamool Congress’ “appeasement” politics, he further alleged.
“Shocking & alarming. @BJP4Bengal is brazenly spreading fake news. Photos of violence from other states ( most from BJP ruled states) are being used as photos from Bengal. These are clear examples of hate mongering & conspiracy,” Trinamool Çongress Rajya Sabha MP Sagarika Ghose claimed in a X post.
Trinamool Congress leader Derek O’Brien on Saturday accused the BJP of stoking communal tension across the country after the passage of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill. “BJP passed the Waqf Bill in the dead of night in Parliament. And after that, they have been busy stoking fires of communalism across various states. This is the classic playbook of BJP-RSS,” he said.
