Nayanthara recalls looking up to Meera Jasmine as a college student, listening to stories about the Malayalam star from her cousin: ‘I was always in awe of her’ | Malayalam News

At a time when Malayalam cinema was completely centred around male stars, particularly following the weddings and subsequent hiatus of Manju Warrier and Samyuktha Varma, Meera Jasmine entered the scene with quite a bang. While she won hearts with her performance in her debut movie Soothradharan (2001), helmed by ace writer-director AK Lohithadas, her ascend to stardom was meteoric, and she became South India’s beloved female lead in no time. By the time Nayanthara made her debut in Sathyan Anthikkad’s Manassinakkare (2003), Meera was a bonafide star in both the Malayalam and Tamil industries, delivering blockbusters and notable performances one after the other.

In fact, with her rise, Malayalam cinema once again started witnessing well-written female characters, crafted primarily for her, and she hit it out of the park as a performer every time. In one way, it can be said that, in the 2000s, Meera walked so her successors could run. Recently, Nayanthara herself shared how big an icon Meera was in the 2000s and how young women, including herself, looked up to her. Interestingly, Meera and Nayanthara belong to the same town, Thiruvalla in Pathanamthitta district, Kerala.

“Also, the college that I studied in was the same college that she did. There, I had a girl on the first bench who was her cousin. Meera was huge at that time. She had just done Run (2002) and all that. This girl (Meera’s cousin) would come and sit with me, and she always had this thing that she’s ‘Meera’s cousin’. Every day she’ll say things like, ‘Oh, Meera is not here. She’s in Switzerland. She’s shooting for the song.’ So, Meera was always there in my ears, hearing about her every day. And I always looked at her in awe,” she said during a special conversation organised by Netflix India as part of the promotions for her latest movie Test.

Interestingly, Test also marked Nayanthara and Meera Jasmine’s first on-screen collaboration. Although Nayanthara held her in high regard all these years, she never met Meera prior to working together in Test, and thus, the project provided her double the joy as she finally got to share the screen with her beloved actor as well. “For me to have met her on our set… I had never met her before… I really wanted to say those things to her, but I never got to,” she added.
