Mohanlal and Prithviraj Sukumaran’s Empuraan has defied all odds and maintained a steady momentum at the box office throughout its 14-day run in theatres. On Wednesday, despite it being a weekday, the film maintained a strong hold at the box office. According to industry tracker Sacnilk, it minted Rs 1.15 crore on Wednesday, bringing its total domestic collection to Rs 102.35 crore.
According to reports, Empuraan has collected Rs 263 crore globally. On Wednesday, the film had an overall 13.77 percent Malayalam occupancy and 11.85 percent Tamil occupancy. While the film continues to do well in the Malayalam-speaking centres, it has also made a significant impact in the Tamil market. However, in the Tamil market, the film now faces competition from Ajith Kumar’s release Good Bad Ugly, which released in theatres on Thursday. Similarly, the Mohanlal-starrer will face competition on home ground as Mammootty’s high-stakes action flick, Bazooka, released in theatres on Thursday.
Empuraan began its box office journey by raking in Rs 21 crore. The film saw a fall in its collection on day two of its release, but it has since maintained a steady momentum. It raked in Rs 88.25 crore in the first week of its release. It saw a 15 percent increase in collection over the weekend before again seeing a fall on weekdays. It raked in Rs 1.55 crore on Monday, Rs 1.3 crore on Tuesday, and Rs 1.15 crore on Wednesday.
Despite its box office run being threatened by new releases, Empuraan has already proved its mettle by catapulting to become the highest-grossing Malayalam film of all time. The film achieved this feat despite its journey being marred by controversies. The makers had to introduce new cuts in the film after many sections raised an uproar over its Gujarat riot scenes. Later, the film’s team faced Enforcement Directorate (ED) raids in different cases.
