Karnataka cabinet to discuss caste census report on Friday, over a year after its submission | Bangalore News

More than a year after it was submitted to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah by the Karnataka State Commission for Backward Classes, the report of the Socioeconomic and Education Survey—popularly referred to as a caste census—will be taken up by the cabinet on Friday.

According to sources in the chief ministers’ office and the law department, the cabinet will discuss the survey report. “The report, since it was submitted, has remained in a sealed cover. Though the government had wanted to take it up earlier this year, it was delayed due to various reasons,” a source said, referring to Siddaramaiah’s remarks that the report would be taken up by the cabinet in January.

The proposal to discuss the survey report—which is opposed by dominant communities such as Lingayats and Vokkaligas—comes against the backdrop of the Congress’ renewed focus on wooing the Other Backward Classes to corner the BJP. At the Congress Working Committee meeting held in Ahmedabad, Rahul Gandhi is learnt to have advised the party’s units to shift their focus to the OBCs as they are estimated to constitute more than 50 per cent of the national population.

The statewide survey, commissioned in 2015 by the previous Congress government led by Siddaramaiah, was completed in 2017 before being kept in cold storage ahead of the 2018 Assembly polls as the party feared political repercussions. The succeeding governments—led by H D Kumaraswamy of the JD(S)-Congress coalition and B S Yediyurappa and later Basavaraj Bommai, both of the BJP—also chose to sit over the report for the next five years.
