96Gbps Bandwidth Support & More

The HDMI Forum has finally announced the complete specs of Version 2.2 of the HDMI Specification. The organization originally introduced the new HDMI standard during the Consumer Electronics Show in January this year. It has now released the detailed specifications of the new HDMI standard for device and accessory manufacturers.

HDMI 2.2 specs include support for up to 96Gbps bandwidth & modern monitors

As expected, Version 2.2 of the HDMI Specification brings massive performance upgrades, including support for up to 96Gbps bandwidth. It succeeds the current HDMI 2.1 standard that delivers up to 48Gbps bandwidth. Furthermore, it brings the next-gen HDMI Fixed Rate Link (FRL) technology. This tech supports high-bandwidth use cases such as AR, VR, MR, special displays, medical imaging, machine vision, and digital signage.

HDMI’s new standard allows smooth playback of uncompressed video formats like 4K at 240Hz. With HDMI 2.2’s specs, the AV industry is leaping forward into ultra-high-definition territories. It can now support resolutions and refresh rates up to 12K at 120Hz and 16K at 60Hz. Additionally, the new standard brings full uncompressed chroma samplings, like 8K@60Hz 4:4:4 and 4K@240Hz 4:4:4 in both 10-bit and 12-bit color depths.

In layman’s terms, the new HDMI standard will allow for cables that allow you to see incredibly detailed pictures on your TVs. This new HDMI cable standard can handle really, really big and clear pictures.

‘Ultra96’ is the feature name for products supporting HDMI 2.2 specs

The HDMI Forum has specified that manufacturers must label HDMI 2.2 cables as ‘Ultra96’ to show that they support bandwidths of up to 96Gbps, resolutions up to 16K, and all HDMI 2.2 applications. This label ensures consumers that they’re buying a certified product with the features they need. The HDMI Forum will require testing for each product to guarantee compliance.

Device and accessory manufacturers can use the ‘Ultra96’ label on HDMI ports, product literature, setup guides, on-screen displays, packaging, and advertised specs. With that in mind, accessory companies could start selling the first HDMI 2.2 standard-supported cables by the third or fourth quarter of this year.
