Not once, not twice, but three times in a row Rajasthan Royals have messed up achievable targets to be all but eliminated from the playoffs race of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season. On Thursday night in Bengaluru, RR suffered their seventh defeat in nine matches – and fifth consecutive – to still be on four points in the table, having played a match more than SRH and CSK below them and are heading for a bottom-three finish in all likelihood with just five matches left in their league season. In this era of big-hitting in T20 cricket, requiring 9 runs-per-over in the death with wickets in hand is as comfortable as it gets but RR have contrived to snatch three defeats from such positions.
RR vs DC in Delhi: Chasing 189 for a win at Kotla, RR managed to bring the equation to 9 off 6 after a 14-run 19th over bowled by Mohit Sharma. They still had 7 wickets in hand and their retained players Dhruv Jurel and Shimron Hetmyer in the middle. But Mitch Starc ran into bowl a terrific 20th over where the two batters couldn’t connect with a series of yorkers from the Aussie left arm pacer, and the match ended up going to a Super Over. More bizarre decision-making followed as RR sent out Riyan Parag and Shimron Hetmyer for the Super Over, when Nitish Rana and Yashasvi Jaiswal had been the best batters on the night. Starc bowled another tight over and DC prevailed.
RR vs LSG in Jaipur: Chasing 181, RR once again had a decent 19th over that went for 11 runs and brought the equation down once again to 9 off 6. Once again, Hetmyer and Jurel were in the middle. Just a while back, they needed 25 off 18 balls when a well-set Jaiswal and Parag were dismissed in one over. But a win was still within their sights, when Avesh Khan ran into bowl the last over. The right-arm pacer too managed to nail his full-length deliveries as first Hetmyer fell to a flick to short fine leg, and the LSG bowler ended up conceding just 6 runs to close out the win.
RR vs RCB in Bengaluru: Chasing 206, RR had gotten off to a flier thanks to a stunning knock off 49 from 19 balls by Jaiswal but started losing their way after the 10-over mark. Still, a 22-run over 18th over conceded by Bhuvneshwar Kumar put RR on the brink of a win, with just 18 now needed off 12 balls. But this time, another Aussie pacer stepped up to douse the run-chase, conceding just 1 run and picking up 2 wickets in a sensational 19th over, that saw the back of a well-set Jurel and big-hitting Jofra Archer. Yash Dayal had 17 runs to defend in the final over and he conceded just 5. From 17 required off 11 balls, RR batters didn’t score a single run off the bat for the next 7 deliveries.
