Hyderabad, July 15: The Hyderabad Police’s SHE Teams unit has reported a concerning rise in incidents of misbehavior towards women during the recent Muharram and Bonalu festivities. According to a press release issued by Dr. Lavanya NJP, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Women Safety Wing), as many as 478 instances of harassment and inappropriate behavior were detected, including 92 minors among the offenders.

The SHE Teams, a specialized task force under the Hyderabad Police aimed at safeguarding women, deployed 14 dedicated teams across various high-footfall areas during the festivals, including Golconda Bonalu, Balkampet Yellamma Temple, and Secunderabad’s Ujjaini Mahankali Temple.

Action Taken

Out of the total 478 individuals apprehended:

  • 288 were warned and let off after counseling.

  • 4 were booked under petty cases, resulting in fines amounting to Rs 1,050.

  • 8 FIRs were registered in different police stations.

  • 5 convictions were secured — one offender received imprisonment with a fine, and four others were fined Rs 50 each.

ā€œThese actions send a strong message that offences against women will not be tolerated, especially during religious or public gatherings,ā€ said DCP Dr. Lavanya NJP.

Preventive Measures and Public Awareness

The enhanced deployment of SHE Teams aimed to ensure the safety and dignity of women attending the crowded festivals. Officers worked undercover and monitored real-time CCTV footage, acting swiftly to apprehend offenders.

The police also reiterated the importance of online safety, warning the public—especially women and young girls—against fake profiles and oversharing personal information on social media platforms.

How to Report

The public is encouraged to report any incident of harassment or suspicious activity by:

  • Dialing 100

  • Sending a WhatsApp message to 94906 16555

Community Response

The proactive steps taken by the SHE Teams have been widely appreciated by both citizens and women’s rights organizations. However, the large number of incidents highlights the ongoing need for stronger community awareness and educational initiatives to tackle gender-based offences at all levels.

As Hyderabad continues to celebrate its cultural and religious diversity, the city’s women deserve to feel safe and respected in every public space.
