At least 47 lakh names were deleted from the voter list in Bihar as the Election Commission published the final electoral roll after conducting a special intensive revision in the state. Concerns had been raised that the revision process could disenfranchise many voters.
This came ahead of Assembly elections expected to be held in October or November.
The poll panel has defended the revision as a clean-up exercise to remove names of the deceased, duplicate entries and undocumented migrants ahead of the elections.
The Supreme Court has said that the exercise could be set aside if it was found to be illegal. The next hearing is on October 7. Read more.
Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam chief Vijay appealed to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin to take action against him and not his party workers in connection with the September 27 stampede that left 41 dead.
“If you [Stalin] have thought of seeking vengeance, you may do anything to me and not touch my party men,” Vijay said in his first video statement after the incident took place during his party’s rally in Karur district.
The actor-politician questioned how the tragedy could have occurred in Karur after his party had already conducted its campaign in five other districts without incident.
His statement came a day after the police arrested his party’s Karur district general secretary in connection with the stampede. Read on.
The prohibitory orders imposed in Leh following the violence on September 24 were relaxed on Tuesday for four hours starting 10 am. Grocery stores, hardware shops and essential services were ordered to be open during this period.
The restrictions had been imposed after four persons were killed in police firing during protests on September 24 demanding statehood for Ladakh and its inclusion in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. This gives tribal majority areas a degree of autonomy. The prohibitory orders barring the assembly of five or more persons were still in force in other major parts of the Union Territory, including Kargil.
Additional District Magistrate Ghulam Mohammed also told PTI that no untoward incident had been reported in Leh after the violence on September 24. Read on.
