2 members of Sambhal mosque committee booked for obstructing ASI team from conducting inspection

Supreme Court grants bail to three men accused in Sambhal

Two members of the management committee of the Shahi Jama Masjid in Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal district have been booked for allegedly obstructing an Archaeological Survey of India team during an inspection related to conservation work, PTI reported on Sunday.

The first information report was filed on November 14.

According to the complaint, a team from the agency’s Meerut Circle led by Vinod Kumar Rawat had visited the centrally protected monument on October 8 to assess the structure ahead of conservation work, the Hindustan Times reported.

During the inspection, a staffer from the mosque committee named Hafiz allegedly summoned another man, Mohammad Kashif Khan, and both allegedly stopped the officials from entering the main dome area of the monument.

The complaint also said that an unidentified person attempted to provoke a confrontation, used abusive language and disrupted the proceedings, forcing the Archaeological Survey of India team to abandon the visit and return to Meerut without completing their work, PTI reported.

The Archaeological Survey of India later sent a written report to its headquarters, after which the Meerut Circle lodged a formal complaint with the Sambhal police, the Hindustan Times reported.

Acting on the complaint, the police registered a case against Hafiz and Khan under Sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita pertaining to obstructing a public servant, assault or use of criminal force on a public servant and criminal intimidation.

Superintendent of Police Krishan Kumar Bishnoi said an investigation is underway and efforts are being made to arrest the accused, the Hindustan Times reported.
