12-fold rise in convictions, penalties for non-compliance in milk and milk products: Minister in RS | Ahmedabad News

The number of convictions and penalties on defaulting food operators for non-compliance in milk and milk products in the country saw a rise by over 12 folds in two years, as per data tabled in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday by the Minister of state for fisheries, animal husbandry and dairying, SP Singh Baghel.

To a question on cases made out against “fake dairy products” seized in the last three years, asked by Rajya Sabha MP and Director, Corporate Affairs, Reliance Industries Ltd, Parimal Nathwani, the minister cited action taken by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), which showed the number of convictions and penalties on milk and milk product operators rise from 552 in 2021-22 to 7,109 in 2023-24.

Similarly, the number of cases launched for these operators also increased from 3,959 in 2021-22 to 10,381 in 2022-23 and further to 14,384 in 2023-24.

The minister stated that dairy products have been classified under high-risk food categories. According to FSSAI, regular surveillance, monitoring, inspection, and random sampling are conducted throughout the year.
