In one of the biggest crackdown against Bangladeshis living illegally in Gujarat, the State’s police administration has rounded up a total of 1024 Bangladeshis from the cities of Ahmedabad and Surat.

Of those caught, two Bangladeshis are suspected to be part of a sleeper cell of Al-Qaeda — a pan Islamic militant organisation — the State government stated in a statement here, Saturday. The government has given time for all Bangladeshis living in Gujarat to surrender before the police, it said, adding that efforts were currently on to deport all those living illegally in the State.

Stating the operation initiated since Friday night is the biggest ever to be undertaken, the state government stated that 890 persons of Bangladesh origin were detained in Ahmedabad and an additional 134 persons were detained in Surat. The action from Gujarat Police comes on heels of a terrorist attack on tourists in Pahalgam region of Kashmir in which 26 persons were shot dead. Of those killed, three were from Gujarat.

According to the state government, investigations have been initiated against the detained Bangladeshis, a majority of whom are believed to be residing in Gujarat after having procured fake documents from West Bengal.
