Days after issuing letters directing school heads to form student teams to inspect shops near schools for the sale of drugs, Faridkot District Education Officer (DEO) Neelam has issued a clarification stating that students only need to stay alert and report concerns, not conduct inspections.
Under the Punjab Government’s ‘Yudh Nasheyan Viruddh’ campaign, the DEO had issued an order on April 4, following a meeting with the deputy commissioner on April 3. The directive required every senior secondary government school in Faridkot to form a team of at least 10 students from classes 9 to 12, along with a nodal officer selected from the teaching staff. These teams were tasked with observing the behaviour of fellow students and reporting any unusual changes to the nodal officer or teachers.
Additionally, the order mentioned that student teams would inspect nearby shops to check for sale of suspicious items. They were told to visit such shops while wearing school identity cards. School heads were instructed to submit lists of team members and nodal officers. However, the directive received no response from teachers, prompting a second order on April 9. This led to objections from the teaching staff, who argued that inspections were beyond the scope of both students and teachers.
Following criticism, the DEO issued a revised letter on Friday, clarifying that students and nodal officers would only be responsible for observing student behaviour within schools. Neelam emphasised that students are not required to inspect shops but can stay alert and report any concerns about suspicious products to their teachers.
