Incumbent Chief Minister Nitish Kumar-led Janata Dal (United) won 85 out of the 243 seats in the Bihar Assembly elections, nearly doubling its tally of 43 seats from the 2020 polls.

The party had 101 constituencies as part of the National Democratic Alliance. It has emerged as the second-largest party in terms of seats won.

The National Democratic Alliance in Bihar also includes the Bharatiya Janata Party, Union minister Chirag Paswan’s faction of the Lok Janshakti Party, the Rashtriya Lok Morcha and the Hindustani Awam Morcha.

The NDA won the Assembly polls, bagging 202 of the 243 seats.

A party or an alliance needs 122 seats in the Assembly to form the government.

Kumar thanked voters for expressing their confidence in the government by giving a “massive majority”. He also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his support.

“The NDA alliance has achieved a massive majority in this election by demonstrating complete unity,” he said on social media. “For this massive victory, thanks and gratitude are also due to all the partners of the NDA alliance, Shri Chirag Paswan Ji, Shri Jitan Ram Manjhi Ji and Shri Upendra Kushwaha Ji.”

Among its allies, the BJP had won 80 seats and was leading in nine more. The Lok Janshakti Party won 16 and was ahead in three, while the Hindustani Awam Morcha had won five. The Rashtriya Lok Morcha had won three seats and was ahead in one.
