In OTT series ‘Inspection Bungalow cops take a vacation

Be careful what you wish for. The devout cop Vishnu has been beseeching his gods for government funds to get his dilapidated police station repaired. Vishnu (Shabareesh Varma) and his team are allotted a haunted house that has a reputation for driving its previous occupants to suicide.

The rumours appears to be true, spooking Vishnu but also pushing him to solve the mystery behind the deaths. Vishnu’s rationalist colleague Parameswaran (Saju Sreedhar) scoffs that a ghost of one of the deceased is hanging around, waiting for revenge or salvation, as the case may be.

An undeterred Vishnu leans heavily on a godman and the expertise of Mythili (Aadhya Prasad). Mythili claims to be a ghost hunter and possesses a gadget that can supposedly detect “paranormal waves”.

Inspection Bungalow, which is out on ZEE5, is written by Suneesh Varanaad and directed by Saiju SS. The Malayalam supernatural comedy show is stronger on the comedy than the supernatural factor.

Vishnu’s idea of a rigorous probe is to dial his priest – hardly inspiring. The police station is converted into a mini-temple where religious rituals take precedence over detection.

The seven-episode series compensates for the absence of suspense with engaging characters who amiably amble their way to the truth. The vacationing cops played by Shabareesh Varma and Saju Sreedhar are pleasant enough, choosing to ignore the obvious and snapping to attention when required. Varma is especially sharp in the comedy scenes, nailing Vishnu’s general air of befuddlement.
