Haryana university staff booked for forcing workers to prove they

The police in Haryana have booked three employees of Maharshi Dayanand University in Rohtak after women sanitation workers alleged that they were forced to photograph their private parts and sanitary pads to prove they were menstruating, PTI reported on Saturday.

The incident took place on October 26, a few hours before Haryana Governor Ashim Kumar Ghosh was reportedly scheduled to visit the university campus.

A first information report was registered on October 29 at the PGIMS police station against sanitation supervisors Vitender and Vinod Hooda, and Assistant Registrar Shyam Sunder, The Indian Express reported.

The FIR was based on a complaint by four women sanitation workers.

One of the complainants said that while the four of them were cleaning the sports complex, the supervisors began pressuring them to work faster.

“We told them we could not work faster because of the pain from our periods,” The Indian Express quoted the women’s written complaint to the university registrar as saying. “The supervisors said: ‘You click photos of your private parts as proof so that the menstrual cycle can be confirmed’”.

Two of the women claimed that under pressure from the male supervisors, they went into the washroom and took photographs of their private parts and sanitary pads, the newspaper reported.

“When two of us refused to follow the instructions, we were abused and threatened with dismissal,” one of the complainants was quoted as saying by The Indian Express.

The persons accused in the case have been booked under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for sexual harassment, assault or use of criminal force with intent to disrobe and outrage a woman’s modesty, criminal intimidation, and acts intended to insult the modesty of a woman, Station House Officer Roshan Lal told The Indian Express.

They may also face charges under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Prevention of Atrocities Act, depending on the findings of the investigation, Lal told PTI.

The university’s Registrar, Krishan Kant, confirmed receiving the complaint and said that an internal inquiry had been initiated, adding that those found guilty “will not be spared”.

The university has suspended the two supervisors, who were hired on contract through the Haryana Kaushal Rozgar Nigam Limited, PTI reported.

The Haryana Kaushal Rozgar Nigam Limited is a state government body that provides contractual employment through an online portal.

The university said that it would not tolerate any incident that compromises safety at the workplace, adding that the dignity of women workers was of paramount importance, The Indian Express reported.
