Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that Murmu has devoted her life to empowering the poor and the downtrodden.
He tweeted, “Smt. Droupadi Murmu Ji has devoted her life to serving society and empowering the poor, downtrodden as well as the marginalised. She has rich administrative experience and had an outstanding gubernatorial tenure. I am confident she will be a great President of our nation.”
Responding to the decision, Murmu said she was surprised and delighted to learn that she’s NDA’s presidential candidate and requested Biju Janata Dal (BJD) for support in the presidential polls, reported PTI.
She said, “Hope all Odisha MPs and MLAs will support me as I was MLA from the state twice and Minister in BJD-BJP Government.”
Meanwhile, Home Minister Amit Shah said that the decision would take “tribal pride to new heights.”
He tweeted on Tuesday, “Today is a very important moment for the country, when NDA under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji and JP Nadda ji, announced Mrs. Draupadi Murmu ji for the presidency. This decision will work to take tribal pride to new heights. I congratulate Modi ji for this.”
He said in another tweet, “I wish her all the best on becoming a candidate for this dignified post and I am sure she will definitely win.”
Earlier on Tuesday, the BJP parliamentary board, which includes Prime Minister Narendra Modi, met in New Delhi to discuss the party’s presidential candidate.
The meeting was held hours after the Opposition announced Yashwant Sinha as a joint nominee.
The party had authorised JP Nadda and Union Minister Rajnath Singh to consult with other political parties to build a consensus on a presidential candidate.
