Amid the North-South debate over issues like delimitation and three-language policy, a Kerala MP on Tuesday raised a point about food cost “disparity” between the two regions. Participating in the debate on the Finance Bill, Congress’s Hibi Eden said South Indian snacks, which are part of daily meals, are charged higher tax than such items in northern India most of the time. “Pazhampori (banana fritters), a common snack for Malayalis, uzhunnuvada (dal vada), and steamed snacks such as kozhukkatta (dumplings) and ilayada (a sweet) are charged GST at 18%. But jalebi, laddoos, barfi and gulab jamuns are taxed at 5%,” Eden pointed out. The Ernakulam MP went on to warn that Lord Ayyappa, the deity at Sabarimala, would not forgive the BJP as unniyappam (an offering considered the favourite snack of the deity)” is also “taxed”.

Pre-poll Buzz

Several Bihar Congress leaders were seen leaving together for New Delhi late Monday evening to attend a meeting with the AICC leadership the following day. Ahead of the Assembly elections to be held later this year, the Bihar Congress has been abuzz with activity amid the appointment of state in-charge Krishna Allavaru and state unit president Rajesh Kumar. The state leadership has been holding meetings almost every second day and a yatra led by the party’s student wing NSUI in-charge, Kanhaiya Kumar, is on.

Special Screening

Chhaava may have been blamed for igniting tensions over Mughal emperor Aurangzeb and triggering violent clashes in Nagpur, but some BJP leaders seem keen to screen the film in Parliament. Sources said the Vicky Kaushal-starrer, based on the high points of the life of Maratha ruler Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, is likely to be screened at Balayogi Auditorium during the ongoing Budget session. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union ministers are expected to join Parliamentarians and the film’s cast and crew during the screening, they said.
