RJD’s Tejashwi Yadav trails in Raghopur

FIRs against Tejashwi Yadav in Maharashtra UP for allegedly derogatory

Rashtriya Janata Dal leader and the Opposition’s chief ministerial face Tejashwi Yadav was trailing by a narrow margin in the Raghopur constituency as votes in the Bihar Assembly elections were being counted on Friday.

As of 12.06 pm, Bharatiya Janata Party’s Satish Kumar Yadav had secured more than 20,100 votes. Yadav had secured about 20,000 votes.

This was after five of the thirty rounds of counting.

“It will be a people’s victory,” Tejashwi Yadav told reporters earlier in the day. “Change will come. We are forming the government.”

Overall, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance was ahead of the Opposition Mahagathbandhan.

The Raghopur seat has been dominated by the RJD since it was won by party founder and Tejashwi Yadav’s father Lalu Prasad in 1995. The only exception was between 2010 and 2015, when the Chief Minister Nitish Kumar-led Janata Dal (United) held it.

Tejashwi Yadav has held the seat since 2015.

The RJD is a part of the Opposition Mahagathbandhan alliance. The alliance also comprises the Congress, the Vikassheel Insaan Party and three Left parties – the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation, the Communist Party of India and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) – along with the Indian Inclusive Party.

The ruling National Democratic Alliance, on the other hand, comprises the JD(U), the Bharatiya Janata Party, Union minister Chirag Paswan’s faction of the Lok Janshakti Party, the Rashtriya Lok Morcha and the Hindustani Awam Morcha.

Former political strategist Prashant Kishor’s Jan Suraaj, which is not part of the two main alliances, is making its electoral debut.

The Mahagathbandhan, in its manifesto, has promised to pass a law guaranteeing a government job to one member of each family within 20 days of forming the government. Another key promise in the manifesto is to put the Waqf Amendment Act on hold.
