A digital detox leads to analogue joy

Thode Door Thode Paas is a comedy drama that explores a modern family’s attempt to unplug and reconnect. Set in the lively Mehta household, the ZEE5 series follows Simran (Mona Singh), who runs a bridal wear boutique out of her garage, her husband Kunal (Kunaal Roy Kapur), an online numerologist, their 19-year-old daughter Avni (Ayesha Kaduskar) and school-going son Vivaan (Sartaaj Kakkar). Kunal has added four extra As to his son’s name to fix his fortunes, yet his report card doesn’t have even one A.

Living next door is Kunal’s brother Kumud (Gurpreet Saini), completing this tech-immersed family setup. Things change with the arrival of Kunal and Kumud’s father. Ashwin Mehta (Pankaj Kapur) is disappointed by the unenthusiastic reception to his return after a two-month sojourn.

Little do the Mehtas know that their well-scrolled lives are about to be disrupted. Ashwin presents them with a hard-to-refuse challenge and opportunity: commit to a six-month digital fast and give up every gadget, every mod-con for an irresistible reward. Ashwin is a 70-year-old ex-naval officer who yearns for the times when connection meant conversation and memories were built without notifications.

Written by Shiirshak S Anand and directed by Ajay Bhuyan, the show is an intimate, thoughtful and occasionally emotional look at what happens when life goes analogue. Professionally, personally, socially and academically, the Mehtas begin to fray. Without smartphones and screens, they fumble through work, school and relationships. In their collective withdrawal, they gradually rediscover something forgotten: presence, attention and familial bonds.

The five-episode series feels warm and relatable, even though it occasionally skims over the deeper challenges of digital dependence in the present. Episode three, for instance, plays like a filler.

The show feels like it’s built on notes borrowed from a podcast or expanded from an Insta-wisdom carousel. Yet, the sincerity of the concept and uncluttered execution keep it afloat.

Pankaj Kapur anchors the show with quiet gravitas and wry humour. His scenes radiate affection and authority, grounding the family’s experiment. The other actors share a familiarity that gives the Mehta household a lived-in feeling.

Thode Door Thode Paas is nostalgia for the pre-digital era, affectionately looking at rotary phones, Walkmans, pen and paper and the 1970s and 1980s as a better time. That is debatable – the series takes a unilateral view on overdependence on gadgets and smartphones. But in focussing on the idea of disconnecting to reconnect, the show does underline what communication actually means in an always-on world.
